Pyrotechnics

The art of creating a firework display can have dramatic and beautiful results for celebrating Independence Day in the United States and various other things around the world. There is also a tremendous amount of risk involved. An estimated 18,500 fires are started each year by fireworks in the United States, according to the National Fire Protection Agency).

This danger has led to many cities banning the sale and use of fireworks for residential use. Only 16 states, including California, allow the sale of “safe and sane” fireworks, meaning “non-aerial and non-explosive” fireworks. Within California, there are 295 communities that permit state-approved fireworks. Formal displays are allowed under different criteria.

Seizing illegal fireworks is a difficult charge for cities that have banned the usage but border cities where fireworks are permissible. Long Beach is one of those cities. Neighboring Lakewood is dotted with fireworks kiosks the week before July 4th.

Fireworks in the news

This month we looked at NEWS in Google for the following topics surrounding fireworks. You might not have noticed in your Google searches that there are subsets for your search results listed in grey under the search bar. NEWS is usually one of the tabs. If NEWS does not show on your search browser, click-on MORE and it will offer you NEWS as an option. The NEWS section will distill the results to articles from news sources, and disregard other extraneous entries.

As you can see there were plenty of places in the state to watch legal shows, and since this is in the news section, we know that this information was made public. With this much news about the negative effects of fireworks, maybe it’s time everyone put away their lighters. According to the NFPA, use of sparklers alone accounts for more than one-quarter of emergency room fireworks injuries.
